I recently participated in a three day mapping workshop held in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Taking place every year, the Indigenous Mapping Workshop (IMW) is organized through partnerships with The Firelight Group, Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Nanaandawewigamig, the Partners for Engagement and Knowledge Exchange, Google Earth Outreach, Google Canada, and Esri Canada. Over 200 community members from across North America participate, share their work and receive technical training in various mapping tools. For a graduate student whose research is centered on indigenous mapping, this workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn about best practices and recent technologies, as well as develop a network of colleagues (indigenous and non-indigenous). A 10-minute Panel was prepared to be co-presented with Anthony Georgekish, a youth from the Cree Nation of Wemindji, currently working on a mapping project with the Wemindji Nation Cultural Department. We wanted to communicate Wemindji's Heritage mapping project and its work on creating an interactive story map.
